Every so often we get a couple jobbers, huh? Honestly, it lowers the stakes if they're only being "punished" for not taking it seriously. It feels like a teen summer camp movie where the killer bursts in because two of the cast are getting it on. It would feel a little more impactful if they were taking it seriously but still died, or made a small slip-up, or anything besides intentionally walk into the haunted suicide room.
Nah see, those guys weren't actually idiots.
I think the deal is that it's not enough to just not open the door. You gotta not open the door AND stay super focused whenever you're around it, or else it's gonna replace whatever you were planning to do next with "open door."
Like look at Hama and Yume. They were OK when they were in front of the door
at first, but when they relaxed on the way back to the elevator
Ta-da all of a sudden they're back in front of the door and Hama's reaching for the handle. If the door didn't stink they'd be goners.
Meanwhile these dudes were
also pretty clear re: that door is hella cursed, don't open it, but they were more relaxed when they approached, so "Put food outside door and leave," became, "welp, guess we gotta open this door."
