You know, like holding your breath. You'll die if you don't breathe, but if you hold your breath you'll just fall unconscious and start breathing again in that unconscious state, meaning that you literally can't kill yourself by holding your breath.
It's probably the same for her as she has stated before that she is not affected when she's asleep.
