It's harder to leave a bad relationship than you think. Fear of being alone, fear of judgement, fear of retaliation, etc. And there's also the stigma of getting a divorce. Her family may not be supportive and just view her as a failure.

The east has very old-fashioned values about marriage just like overly religious people in the west. Leaving her husband could be considered abnormal in her circle of family, friends (if she has any) and community. Add in that she'd be leaving her husband to be with a woman and it's a huge mountain for her to climb.

She's not stupid. She's afraid and probably has no support system. MC needs to be bold here and reach out to her to save her from the hell she's in. Not everyone can climb out of deep ass pit without a rope or ladder to help them. Once she has the ladder, it's up to her whether to use it. Probably with some convincing along the way.

People say you write what you know. 🤷‍♀️ Human relationships are hard and very seldomly straightforward. It would be a very short manga if Gotou-san just ran away and immediately jumped into Shigisawa-san's arms with no thought for the other sides of their personalities and stories. The complications are fairly realistic and well-thought out. The characters are acting in character according to their experiences and personalities. Gotou-san is frightened of being anything except what she perceives as "normal" despite how painful that "normal" is for her, and how happy she knows she would be with Shigisawa-san. Shigisawa-san has been burned by this exact situation so of course would be hesitant to jump right back into a similar situationship. Everyone is scared and being brave is vulnerable. It makes me feel that if they do end up getting together, they will be stronger because being together was hard-won; they had to overcome obstacles together to get to a place of mutual happiness. They'll want to protect that happiness more.

But what do I know? I'm a scared, single lesbian who lives vicariously through these manga characters. 😂😂😂 I find this one particularly relatable.
