of course the phone is at zero battery in the moment of need, but for once it works, as MC isn't used to one he forgot to charge it, or the evil apparition made it lose energy
sensei is a weird adult, but is not bad
only thing I disliked abotu this chapter was MC walking to his death, he knows perfectly how vulnerable he is in a normal area, so a isolated mountain was suicide, teach even told to not go, he is a livng bait for monsters and spirits and didn't bring anything that could help
yeah, a bad chapter, the reasoning that it was made to show that the teacher is a good person doesn't counterbalances it

I think the chapter has three purposes:
1. of course, to show more of sensei, as you said

2. Kurokiri's lack of self-confidence and need to prove that he's better than that, which leads him to be reckless, not heeding any of the warnings (which is something people actually do, as the need for validation overwrites any understanding and sense of danger). Also, at the end of volume 1, he said he wants to be stronger, so he tries to do just that, he just overestimates himself for no reason (a curious byproduct of his lack of self-confidence is the attempt to overcover it). That's why sensei even warned him to "keep at it steadily", regardless of how he misinterpreted it. It's also a pretty common trope. Fair if you don't like it obviously
Also good catch about the phone losing power because Kurokiri doesn't use that stuff.

and 3. I'm not sure if it returns in a big way, but it introduces the secret notebook. It might become relevant again in the future

MC wanting to try to do something on his own makes sense, but is denied from him living his whole life fearing spirits as they are attracted to him and he know they can hurt him with more than just a scare.
So he deciding to go alone close a mountain that he would know by life experience is dangerous denies it.
I would accept it if he got some exorcist items and after using them a couple times on weak ghosts and repelling them he got overconfident, but nope.
