Ooof, right in the feels.
Well, what an ending. I do have some very legitimate criticisms about the pacing in the last 20-30 chapters with it almost feeling like the story was playing back at 2x speeds at times, but overall WOW!
Vampire Knight is a story that spent a long time in the making. Overall the series spent nearly a decade being written and drawn, with what must have been a chapter only every month or two. Despite that extreme length of time I do think it has achieved it's goal of laying out an emotional, coherent story for us the readers. This story has clearly had some real work put into it even up until the very last pages, which is something that many other manga of this nature (infrequent releases over close to a decade or more) fail to do. While I have had the privilege of reading it all in one go, I do think if I was following this over the years is was being published I would not have been disappointed by the story's conclusion in the slightest. I feel very satisfied with the conclusion of Vampire Knight and I think the melancholic nature of the ending only helps to cement it as one of the best Gothic-style manga ever written (at least, according to my knowledge and tastes).
I think special praise must also go to all the groups who have worked on translating this work over the years. While there have been fluctuations in quality over time as the story is passed from group to group, overall the series has maintained a high degree of quality in both the art and the translations over a significant length of time. I understand that is is not uncommon for manga series to run, sometimes for decades, but in this instance I think we should all give credit where credit is due.
So to reiterate one final time: Congratulations to Hino Matsuri for crafting this spectacular story for us. You have made a story that makes the reader feel sad in a good way, a great achievement; and a thank you to the many groups who have worked on this project over the years to bring us the entire completed story in English.
Now, its time to dive into the heart-wrenching sequel (or so I hear) Vampire Knight Memories, and see whether or not Hino Matsuri managed to recapture the magic of Vampire Knight.
