Meanwhile Europeans had to deal with broken poorly programmed conversions that were literally unbeatable.
But they could always poke the memory and give themselves infinite lives.

Old games are definitely not easier

They're certainly simpler, which generally means they're easier to learn to play. Of course, there's often a big gap between that and mastery to the point of beating them, but they're not intended to be beaten quickly. They're intended to last for a long time.
