Argh, what a cliffhanger! But yeah definitely pure Sayman, a lot of his works do a great job playing and exploring nested realities and the nature of being. Here rather than time travel looks to be effectively a nested world instead. But was someone running an experiment on them in turn or what? Turtles all the way down?

What an exceptional chapter, I love when the plot threads all start to come together and all the mysteries begin to unravel.
Dowman Sayman has such a gift.

So, judging by the state of the world in the "modern day" past this flashback, I have to assume that the survey ships must've discovered something truly horrifying about the universe...or brought something truly destructive back.
FASCINATING that they've been inside the vivarium the entire time.
