This is very disappointing. The garden system was clearly working and then they have this completely unrealistic person show up just so the MC can rebel against it. Guppy would be constantly surveiled as well so even outside the view of his personal stream people would just see he's a scumbag.
I would honestly live in the garden system if it is how it's initially presented.
Maybe it's meant to be like the social media environment now where as long as you have enough "clout" from an audience who watches you and as long as that particular audience you have grown approves of your actions then you are powerful.
It's not meant to be like a social media system where the viewers are nationally representative on all the livestreams.
It's only when something high profile happens and you get a general spotlight beyond your specific audience then you're subject to the general standards of society, otherwise having a dedicated audience makes you untouchable
Similar to how if you have a decent sized dedicated audience then you can get them to all mass-report an enemy and often that enemy will have their post deleted or face some sanction just because the social media moderation processes favour going with the majority.
I could imagine in a society like this most people generally behave well because they of the cameras and only a small% of high profile streamers can bend the rules by catering to specific audiences while flying under the radar by only pressuring and bullying nobodies.
but I agree it is in tension with the premise. You would expect a high profile streamer to be afraid of getting exposed and canceled and even if he asked for a date off camera his behaviour on camera is still by normal stndards creepy.
But then again, it reminds me very much of that transgender tiktoker who goes to restaurants and films themselves the whole time then always uploads a video when a waiter or waitress address them as "sir" . They get a lot of backlash but still have quite a lot of viewers.
So maybe it isn't a one to one analogy but I think it still works decently.
