I suppose the female wear were taken from dead or displaced polish people as a part of various atrocities committed by the soviet union around this time. Someone well versed in history wanna clarify?

---

Thanks to all who answered. The question received quite some replies so I'd quote the most detailed one by @Simpleton:
Stolen stuff wouldn't have been uniform. Besides, Poland was pretty much looted out by the Germans already. So it's more like the Soviets were finally winning enough that they could start specializing production a bit. (They lost a lot of industry early in the war, and after that a lot of workers, so what they had available was used only for the bare minimum - any variety would reduce production.) Possibly it could have been lend-lease from the allies, but that was mostly aircraft and trucks/engines IIRC. A fair amount of cotton, though, so it might be such deliveries that finally made their way to the front.

@rephikul I doubt female Soviet soldiers participated on the Katyn massacre.

I gotta give credit to Koume-sensei for making the manga version Svetlana Alexievich look almost exactly as her younger counterpart.

@rephikul I think it's just implied that after years the soviet army realized that women have unique needs, like lol bras. A few chapters ago it explains how they went without pads. These women were risking their lives to protect their country and stop the Nazis, but to their country for the most part they were an afterthought.

I will say, however, Russia and Eastern Europe in general is really good about highlighting the accomplishments of women during the war. If you don't know it, check out the story of the Nightwitches. Shit was crazy.

I believe the point is that she started to cry at the realization at how something so simple and normal like proper underwear was considered something extremely amazing and out of place during the war. That they simply got so used to abnormal conditions that something normal you don't think twice about in your daily life had become something amazing for those women.

Seems like a cool premise for a manga, though might be too niche since you probably gonna need to research the operations/what kind of engines/car etc.

I suppose she jokes about the underwear issue as a coping mechanism. The bad memories were such that it's simply better to just talk about something light-hearted instead.

The one with the photographer hit quite hard at first I thought maybe it’s a Soviet thing then you realize the reason why she never took any tragic photos

Typo on page 5: "soliders" >> "soldiers"
Typo on page 9: "stoped" >> "stopped"
Typos on page 11:
"Do you know what it is war?" >> "Do you know what war is?"
"What are we to do?" >> "What are we going to do?"

Maybe taking your kid to war isn't the smartest of ideas even if it isn't the frontlines...

The interview with Lola Akhmetova (the riflewoman who spoke about the abundance of male underwear for the female troops):

@CosmicWitch I think it's a bit unfair to judge the country for not preparing bras for relatively small number of volonteers in logistical hell of, oh, I don't know, biggest war in human history waged on own territory...
@rephikul Don't give me this polish victim complex and I won't remind you of polish volonteers within the reichs SS divisions. Do you want to know about jew police? "Funny" story.
@OmegaKaiser Speaking of victim complex, do you by any chance know any sourse regarding why would anyone transport prisoners for hundreds kilometers just to massacre them?

@CosmicWitch "to their country, they're just an afterthought". welcome to the life of men feminism wanted so bad. men's life always been regarded as something cheap during war (or even daily life). hey, women want to take men's job? good! more disposable to the society!

Ahahah, this site moderates posts on political basis. I mean not deleting posts with political content, I mean deleting posts that don't fit political agenda.
Though it's really more history then politics, but to say this site moderates posts with historical content is even more hilarious.
