I can sort of understand this. It's just pure desperation. Last chance to do something. It's not particularly healthy, and it can often drive people to do the wrong thing, but they will do things. As far as a story goes, acting is better than not acting, or avoiding contact, and it usually goes past what would be normally acceptable.
