Sure the incest is disgusting, but we don't know whether this "tarot-reading" thing is similar to or even is a genetic trait itself, and incest may increase the chance of that trait persisting from generation to generation, even if the next generation might be a miss. Incest is practiced very widely, in plants or domesticated animals if scientists want a particular trait to eventually persist as the dominant trait. Plus, the family don't see her as a person, they see her as a tool. So they may or may not care very much for her health, considering the physical abuse she went through as a child. The family is so dumb, keeping it in the family also means passing it to a child with multitudes of genetic mutations
But all of those were done in a controlled environment where scientists have a certain control of the mutations. Meanwhile you cannot do that to humans. Royalties mainly inbred to preserve power, not to pass on desirable trait. And those that extensively practiced it faced high infant mortality. Those that survived the inbreeding had a high probability of having multitudes of mutations that limit their lifespan or even their functioning as a human being. Lets say that inbreeding does increase the chance of passing on the tarrot reading ability, you cannot capitalize on it if the resulting generation are all ridden with genetic diseases. The bloodline, along with the ability, would disappear. Even if they view their kin that has that ability as a tool, you cannot use a defective tool, can you?Sure the incest is disgusting, but we don't know whether this "tarot-reading" thing is similar to or even is a genetic trait itself, and incest may increase the chance of that trait persisting from generation to generation, even if the next generation might be a miss. I don’t think they would think that far ahead honestly. They just needed the ability. If their family even misses by 1 generation, their family would go down. Sure they could just get some guy and have her give birth to a lot of children. I wasn’t thinking too deep into it at the time, just trying to understand why the villains do what they do.But all of those were done in a controlled environment where scientists have a certain control of the mutations. Realistically, they should have noticed a pattern, especially if that’s how they’ve kept power in the family for generations. There’s no way they wouldn’t realize the problems caused by inbreeding after all that time. Plus, the setting is pretty modern, surely there are scientific reports or news that highlights the dangers of inbreeding? I know I’m nitpicking, but my point is that fiction should still be grounded in reality to some degree. The author should’ve fleshed out the idea of power preservation in a more believable way, like forming an alliance between families and rotating the heir. That way, there would be more at stake for the tarot girl’s family, since losing power to an outsider could threaten the entire alliance.I don’t think they would think that far ahead honestly.
