I know you're most likely joking but just in case, if it wasn't obvious already (it is if you read the first pages again) the old man wasn't hunting "young" spirits, he was in the river looking for any random kappa to have a sumo match (there's folklore here) and what he found was a young one who clearly was struggling to survive. Because the old man is eccentric with spirits he decided to teach him how to fish and get by in his own domain as much as he could with the little time he had left.Look, I know I'm supposed to be feeling some pathos here, but I kinda can't get over how sketchy the premise of an old man setting up a painting that young-looking spirits can enter freely but can't leave without his permission is.
