Been a while since I last read this, which honestly makes me super grateful about the slice of life format — it makes it easy to catch back up. But this is definitely a lot different from the rest, because while we’ve seen a lot of Nick and Jenni, we haven’t really seen much of Yogi… I even forgot that was her name.
I think it’s interesting that the possibility of having a new sibling makes Angel reflect on what she currently has, and they seem to feel guilty over the way they’ve treated Yogi. But also, given the fact that their gender changed, that must have surely changed their dynamic with their sister too…
And I really like how that’s acknowledged in the story, when Yogi and Angel are at the swings. What I found both very sweet and interesting is how Yogi seems to treat Angel’s feelings of being a boy very seriously — she doesn’t seem to think Angel’s crazy, but genuinely wants to know about it.
That entire conversation raises an interesting possibility though — what if Angel’s memories of being a boy are all fake? I’ll admit… that possibility never even came to mind, but I guess it is more likely than them just happening to change gender, especially after a head injury…
My favourite part of this though was how Yogi reacts to all this, being genuinely sad because she thinks that Angel doesn’t want to be her big sister anymore, and yet despite their own confusion about the situation, Angel reaffirms that they’ll always be there.
And that’s a really touching thing, especially since in the few interactions these two have had before, they’ve always been vaguely annoyed with each other. It’s nice to know that deep down, they do care about each other.
But certainly, the end of this chapter definitely changes things up a lot… a new sister. On one hand, it’s obviously a good thing, but on the other… it’s yet another thing tying Angel down to this new world. It seems like the more they try and escape it, the more it keeps pulling them back in… and that egg just keeps hatching too. I really wonder what all of this is building up to…
