Like to some extent I can understand him. Imagine you are just chiiling, living your life, then suddenly you are put in liffe nad death situation, litterwlly every single person you encounter f*cking dies and you don't know when it's your turn. Honestly other protagonists are generally way too cheerful and upbeat about being in such a situation
