I'd love to watch some, it's been a long time since I watched an original anime

That depends on what you're looking for, I personally recommend starting with Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu (Legend of the Galactic Heroes). The original series, not the bland remake. Also Kaze no Na wa Amnesia and Megazone 23.
Edit: after getting confused with the previous message, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu came from a novel so not original. So I'm going to mention last decade anime such as Inferno Cop, Shirobako, Sora Yori mo Tooi Basho and Uma Musume Pretty Derby.

FLCL is the first one that comes to mind for me. Bebop, Lain, Eva, Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi... I'm dating myself a bit here, I think.

Thinking about it, there aren't comparatively that many anime getting made now that aren't manga/LNs, huh? Not sure there were that many twenty-five years ago either, but recently it seems like two thirds of the series are Isekai LN #8472....

Oh, I thought you meant anime originals at first.. Well everyone recommending more older animes so how about something more new; March Comes In Like a Lion? It feels pretty original and unique for a modern anime.

And here's another one, Baccano!. I don't want to explain much because it's best to go into it completely blind but I don't think I've seen any other anime do the ideas it does. I think the only downside of this one for some is that it's very confusing at the start on purpose.

That's what I initially thought too but then I read the first two replies and thought maybe I read it wrong somehow.
to be honest, I did not see the "original" part of the title when I posted

Steins;Gate was just the first anime to pop up in my mind that wasn't yuri

the question is really abstract
I mean... that The Boy and Heron movie got Best Animated Feature at the Academy Awards and couple other awards
I've seen it... and... well... I'm not exactly a Ghibli fan myself, so...
I'm more into Your Name and Maquia kind of story

for non movie and haven't mentioned above.... Psycho Pass?

I am shocked and appalled that no one has mentioned Meduka Meguca yet. Or Neon Genesis Evangelion. If you want weird psychological stuff, Paranoia Agent or Odd Taxi work (I'm pretty sure Odd Taxi doesn't count as an adaptation). There's also Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, which is psychological action.

I can't be bothered to dig into my watched list deeper lol. Everything else got mentioned already anyways

Sorry dood but I already got one magical girl anime and it's Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha, the best of the best. :02: :bleh:

And to add onto this thread, Darker than Black is another great anime original.
