damn that's a real bummer of a past, but i'm curious to know how he ended up as he is now with how he hates mages so much. hopefully they can justify his actions so far

Yeah it's wild how much of a decent kid he is in the flash back versus the short he is currently.

Huh, Gheer's actions become more confusing the further the flashback progresses
If anything, I'd expect him to hate humans instead of mages by now.

Also, what kinda debt collector kills the person in debt? A dead person can't work to pay you :nyoron:
Or did he (try to) rape Gheer's mother and killed her afterwards?
She also told Gheer that their supposed debt was higher than what it should be, so he probably scammed them, and maybe that led to a violent argument :thonk:

Getting a read on Gheer is really hard, probably because of how different portrayals of him can be. Though, after re-reading this arc several times, I think I'm beginning to get it.

First of all, Gheer has serious trust issues that he isn't even aware of himself. Caring for his mother – the only person he ever deemed family – just made his life difficult. His abusive stepfather showed him that making connections is even worse. He says to Raloud this chapter that "any family that left a kid like you alone is definitely trash;" this actually reflects how he thinks about family. If someone left him, they're terrible people and were never good to begin with. This is why he tries to kill Raloud for "leaving him behind."

Due to his past, Gheer is cynical and actively detests establishing equal relationships with other people: he has only seen the troubles it can cause. He sees the world as a take-or-be-taken from situation, where helping others is futile: his landlord and bosses all held power over him and profited, while his attempts to share his mother's burdens did nothing but make him miserable. He took advantage of Raloud because of this, and because he could not have cared for Raloud in the first place.

Gheer believes that bad things happen when he deals with other people; in fact, Gheer has started thinking about this the other way. When he gets captured by Belator, he believes that it is Raloud's fault. This might seem like stupid reasoning, but Gheer genuinely believes it because that's kind of who he is.

What makes his character interesting to me is his rather nuanced relationship with Raloud. When being locked in Belator's carriage, Gheer blamed Raloud for everything that happened to him in spite of Raloud's kindness, because, at his core, he is really jealous of Raloud. Raloud is naive enough to be trusting (as seen through this chapter's apple situation); what's more, Raloud has a family to search for, and a reason to live.

Gheer is a terrible person, but even terrible people want happiness, which is why Gheer is an extreme version of a tsundere: he doesn't have any repressed brotherly love for Raloud or anything, but Raloud's existence simultaneously gives him hope and pisses him off. I believe he does want to "make himself useful for once." The piece-of-sh*t Gheer that betrayed Raloud is just as real as the cynical Gheer who let Raloud eat the apple.

Looking back, Gheer is just a person who learned all the wrong lessons, making him not completely irredeemable. In a manga series about mages who find it difficult to trust others, perhaps this loser with trust issues will be forced to rely on others for the first time.

maybe it's because i read JJK, but i'm a little fed up of all these backstories that can't conclude in one chapter or less
