rather than it being b/c people arent bright
id say its b/c we are conditioned to be painfully optimistic
in most wuxia no tragedy will ever befall the MC and his wahmen
and if such an occurrence was to take place
it would happen in a tale before the MC's reincarnation to set the background for a tragic hero/ villain
there are other things to factor in like how he helped her advance her sword style (iirc)
people will just see this as more proof that nothing bad can happen to her since that connection
