I know chapter 1 wasn't their first time talking, but isn't this girl way too desperate?

She gave him a gift and repeatedly told him how much she appreciates and respects him for tying up magazines (?), then on the next day she followed him halfway home, asked for his contact and spammed him with hug stickers and then what I can only assume it was still in the same day she calls him for at least 1 hour and 40 minutes in the middle of a school week.

Is she gonna become a yandere at some point? Is this the kind of development we're getting?

I think it might be to offset how he perceives her.

From what I can gather, our MC thinks of her as a man-eater and a flirt, someone who chews through boyfriends and boytoys with her group of other girls just like her, and that she only approaches boys in a predatory manner with the express purpose of using them up and increasing her own prestige, while getting a laugh out of stringing them along - putting up a fake front, a constant pushing and pulling, one step forward one step back sort of song and dance.

But instead, she genuinely likes him and is earnest and forward about it. She does have a proactive aspect to her, but it's not in the "I'm going to wring you dry and laugh at you as I leave you" sort of way. It's just that his filter is leading him (and to a degree the reader) to perceive her as simply looking to chew him up and spit him out, so her behavior, while very forward and active, seems more...I guess "aggressive" than is actually the case.

Or she could be a bit of a yandere. But I'm not expecting that to be the case, and it could honestly also be that he's the first boy she's actually liked, which would fully flip his perception of her on its head - and she's just enthusiastic and giddy in her pursuing him.

I think @UdenEmpati is right. He must be the first boy Sayo likes and she's running at 200% going after him. Also, I don't think she's a yandere. As for Matsuura, he must not have interacted much with girls (and his few encounters have probably ended in confusion or disaster), hence his mistrust and complete misinterpretation of the situation.

Thank you for the translation! :hearts:

I'm actually interested to learn if there's a trigger for the reason Matsuura feels like he's an outsider with a unique grasp of the human condition (at least going by how he frames his interactions with classmates in his narrating in the first chapter).

Given he sorta acts like he's got a soul-read on people and knows what they're really thinking, it almost reads like some sort of chuuni-adjacent "fantasy", like a sensitive kid feeling like he can read his classmates' minds because he's particularly attuned to body language or something, but lacks the actual knowledge in correctly sussing out what's really going on. (Totally not speaking from personal experience or anything, nope nope not at all)

It could be that he had some less-than-great interactions in middle school that have caused him to turn inward and become insular and aloof toward others, but his self-proclaimed "I see the bigger picture" attitude coupled with his clearly-incorrect read on the FL's demeanor and true intent, sorta read like he's just a bit fantasy-bent and thinks he's got some special trait that exists in his own brain, and he's really just your typical goofy kid whose head is in the clouds a bit, and just lacks experience in this particular situation and only has manga and third-hand experience to go on.

Though, given he specifically thinks she's a man-eater and player who's only seeking to screw with him, your idea might very well hold water, and/or it ends up being a mix of the two.

Either way, it's honestly kind of endearing, especially since we get none of her internal thought process and are wholly reliant on what we see her doing & saying around him to get any idea as to how off-base his interpretation really is. Makes me wonder how many chapters we'll go before he figures it out (or she loses patience and speaks up about liking him).

She's assertive but not exactly desperate. About the phone call thing she's not serving MC by doing it. She's just enjoying herself with it as she likes talking with her dude, and in that case spending an hour or two on the phone is fairly normal. Everything else you said too, again, assertive but not desperate.

from chapter 1 discussion:
Reminds me of dangers in my heart
the older sister looks like Kana, even the living room layout with the sofa kinda reminds me of Ichikawa's house with the cutout to the kitchen. Chapter 71 of The Dangers in My Heart shows both: The Dangers in My Heart, Vol. 5, Ch. 71
the similarities to The Dangers in My Heart (aka BokuYaba) keep piling up. To add to the list:
