I'm struggling to remember any romance / romcom manga where a character introduced after the heroine ever ended up winning out. At best they got a temporary girlfriend arc, but in the end the MMC always ends up with the FMC, no matter how much more interesting and fitting in personality a side character was.

Very much doubt this one will be different.

Most of the time it's the first. If it's not first then it's either none of them or all of them, or otherwise inconclusive. Actual ending with anyone but the first is very rare.

I think the few examples people are posting here (thanks everyone, have to check if there's something interesting) pretty much solidify the "exceptions to the rule".

Spoiler: to add one that comes to mind myself,

I heard that in Classroom of the Elite the MC ends up dating a character that was a minor side character for the first arcs. Haven't read or watched that far myself though so can't confirm

although, it's not manga so I guess it's not applicable anyways

There is one from like 7 years ago where the main character dates the girl introduced third.
It's one of those POV comics and I have it in my "completed" list but that list is huge and I can't find it (and obviously I forgot the full title).
It's full color and the first girl is a tanned gyaru, if you ever happen to stumble upon it.

The only reason she won was because it was a twitter voting thing, as soon as she appeared, people kept voting for her over and over. It shows that for a lot of these stories the FMC and MC are the least interesting couple to follow, as they're quite literally made to be compatiable.

That's the problem with introducing another girl too early, especially one that's more unique and varied than FMC. Why aren't we following her? The author gives them much more character outside of love interest, since they're not going to win.

Just read this one because of your comment and the resolution was actually so satisfying. I honestly believe that authors have a tendency to write “better fitting” girls after the first one because they come into understanding their MC and writing groove better. More stories should have second/third girl wins honestly.

Tbh, i can see a story where the first girl learns to appreciate him more as a friend since as of now its rather raw for her to think shes attracted to him when it could very well just be a very fulfilling platonic relationship (they're written to be more endearing that way imo) and then comparatively these two feel more like a couple given their shared interests, fondness and sense of community. Like if the first girl didnt exist, these two would easily fit into a romantic drama between lit nerds. Might just be this specific chapter being paneled as such tho.

LOL, but one of the oldest - in fact the actual pioneer of the genre - had exactly this premise. Urusei Yatsura. People forget that the original heroine was supposed to be Shinobu, and Lum was just going to be a rival of the week. Admittedly it's more of a case of heroine replacement, but technically the originator of the genre did have the second girl win right off the bat.

TWGOK has a decisive victory for a fan-favorite character who did not show up in the first chapter, and who showed up after the FMC, who I'd argue is the shinigami girl.

TWGOK fans are still alive lol.

I'd agree that the shinigami girl was a FMC but not a love interest tho. I mean the author clearly shows that their relationship are just siblings-level, except for that one date arc.
