Interesting way to work the story around this cliche trope. That the young blind people propably at least know each other from school or other groups and therefore are still concerned is a good way to not use it as a complete throwaway line. I get the feeling too often "someone had an accident, oh it's nobody I know" is used as a cheap throw away scene, without thinking about the pain somebody else feels, instead of the main characters.
