I think it's just copying from the novel while the artist drew their own thing because the author's description was vague. Disappointed in the artist's lack of imagination though, this is downright lazy. I always got the impression that this city was supposed to look almost like a labyrinth/block puzzle where the buildings are made of wood instead of stone

Yeah but each of the other female mercs thar got a PoV chapter sounded like he wasn't involved. I'm sure it was in an effort to make his relationship ambiguous and easier for the audience to self insert, but instead it just feels like he went on the clichéd Japanese world tour.

If the loli princess here has blue eyes and blond hair, she just might hit all the male Japanese weakpoints.
