IMO Americans ask for political & or economy supremacy. I think, they thought that it's too much of a hassle to manage another land. They just let natives manage themselves and ask for something in return.
But how much country that took that resolution compared to another? USSR, takeover. What else? Israel, takeover.
It's like this world is just big experimental chess table to see what idea works & which'd be stumped.
I'm guessing if this comic Germany wins, they'd return their lands after 60's

Yes, WW2 Germany is prime example of that. But after WW2, geopolitic seems start to shift to diplomacy as primary power (?)
Uhm..... The US did not behave like that with Mexico. Texas for once, was Mexican territory before seized by the US after some conflicts.

And no, the dynamic in geopolitics has always been enforced with military prowess. And again, the US is a prime example of that: they maintain over 750 military installations in more than 80 countries and territories around the globe. Each has the capability to keep the region in question under military threat. Diplomacy comes after that. In other words, military prowess is still the base for diplomacy. This is quite a smarter move, since the US gets to keep threatening people, but doesn't really get seen as an occupant, thus, keeping the upper hands in diplomacy while not taking as much hate from public opinion. It's not perfect, but is still another way we get from actual history in our world.

And about this Germany, I bet they would not be so lenient in the unlikely case that they'd win against the other powers. They literally took over Dacia earlier. There isn't a single sign they'd move on from the idea that winner takes all any time soon. Even in our world, the movements for independence in the 60s only happened because some decided to fight for it after the power balance was tippping over after WW2 after all.
