I don't think we ever got what happened to the mayor and his son
I really, really wish [naive/justifiable defense-squeamish/retribution-averse] culture JP authors would actually own up to realistic punishments for their villains -- equal to their evil the author had the impetus to create.

They seem to think it's OK to attempt to write it off as "the isekai police came" or "evil was vanquished (aku wa satta)" like some Power-Rangers skit baddie exploding in the sunset.
  • The son was kidnapping and sexually assaulting women off the street. The knights abducted them. And the mayor covered it up. I'm surprised a lynch mob didn't form once they were taken down, or tortured / maimed in their jail cells.

(This is what happened widely in Middle Ages through 19th century with highly unpopular figures. Fine, throw isekai magic in there, but human nature doesn't change.)

  • And the "good" knights being incompetent (or complicit) and not stopping it -- yet somehow trying to ride bandwagon of the "hero" in the conclusion. I thought the recruitment offer was absurd.

When they ordinarily would be treated with disdain of the townspeople and have to rebuild trust from scratch. Only one or two stories I've read actually followed through with this.

("I was reincarnated, but I try to live without using cheat abilities"; WN author Ookuni Masato being an older person.)
If writers are going to write a mega-evil villain, and spend entire chapters describing each of their atrocities -- they need to spend equal (or commensurate) amounts of time on the postprocessing and followup.

In terms of literary act structure, JP authors tend to drop it off a cliff after climax -- as opposed to having ramp-down epilogue. I think I mentioned this Western/Eastern problem with narrative in some prior posts. It also explains the "dragging" phenomenon unappealing to Western audiences -- since middle 2 acts in structure waste time.

I don't think we ever got what happened to the mayor and his son (or at least mostly on the latter) in the anime. It's surprising he managed to survive with an illness, but yeah, he probably wished he was dead at this point.

I think the hero will silence the son.
Can't let others know the demon ring actually came from him after all.

Hmmm, did she say she wants him to come at night ... OH, she said she wants him to become a knight ... that's a WHOLE 'NOTHER skill set. Gotta get my ears cleaned out again ... or was that my eyes?
