Would have rather seen her develop with her schoolmate more instead of that annoying failed mangaka.

The author hinted an unhealthy amount of romantic signs between completely matching character only to end the series with the worst couple, truly devastating

I really enjoyed this, but that sort of open-ended, ambiguous 'did he say yes?' relationship between the MC and the adult mangaka really sours the ending for me

I didn't read it that way. It's pretty obvious that he's humoring her. He's never given any sign of seeing her as a woman.

She's 12. By the time he moves away and then moves back, she'll be a completely different person. He knows that, she doesn't. He doesn't want to hurt her feelings because he cares for her (in a non-romantic way), so it puts him in an awkward spot.

So the best thing to do is a kiss on the forehead and a "we'll see."

maybe I'm just letting the oneshot (chapter 11.5) impact this work too much, since the mangaka definitely seemed to entertain a reciprocal relationship more in that than this, but I still felt like the dude was entertaining the relationship more than humouring her in this serialised work.

Also, my impression of this manga was that it was about the realisation and understanding of the differences between childhood and adulthood, and her eventually embracing 'childhood' and moving on from her notions of and desire to 'be an adult', however the fact that she's still steadfast in those romantic feelings in the end kinda soured that message for me. But perhaps the manga's not about that at all.
