The "sun" to pull all the freaks outTotally forgot this was getting an adaptation, super hyped. It’s one of my favorites on Kakuyomu because the updates are always super meaty and the writing quality stands head and shoulders above its peers. Not sure how much well that’ll translate to manga, but they seem to get that what makes this story work is the awkward balance between the comedy of Wolca’s inner monologue and the tragedy of his traumatized companions.
From Wolca’s POV, he just beat the bad end. He’s won, so while he’s injured, he’s happy because he’s defied fate and it rules. From his companions’ POV this is the worst outcome imaginable. At least with death they could grieve, right, but instead he’s injured and there’s a looming question about his future as a swordsman and what might have been since the maiming is seemingly permanent.
And the kicker is what you can already see—since Wolca is just a guy, and not some epic hero, he steps on verbal landmines and isn’t perfectly capable of comforting his companions. Instead they have certified yandere moments and he freaks out internally, which is tragicomedy gold.
As an aside for those comfortable with vague spoilers about the general outlook of future cast members: a good chunk of them become emotionally unstable because of Wolca’s injuries, are emotionally unstable/have tragic backstories for non-Wolca reasons but gravitate towards him, or just have a screw loose. He’s like a magnet for weird characters and it rocks
Wolka: coughsI read vol 1 of the light novel so far and the tone of the story is a weird one. The "comedy" is Wolka inner monologue of how his party becoming more attached. Wolka gets small moments of outburst but he gets over it quickly. However his party members take this outburst way too seriously. The team member felt they made a great sin so they want to help Wolka whatever they can. Wolka himself is very chill dude even with no leg and an eye. He just wants to master the "I am the storm that is approaching" technique because it looks cool.
Lizel is attached to him like a little brother and sleeps on the same bed as him. Lizel actually is an old lonely non-human woman but lived in an empty frontier and doesnt get along with people because of her stubbornness. Its until she met Wolka as a child when he was practicing magic that she took him in as an apprentice. The party name Silver-Gray is based on their hair color and a way to get him to be stuck with her. Lizel has immense guilt for Wolka because she's the team leader that took the quest and felt she took away his future.
Yuritia is the one leaning towards being a real yandere as she express wanting to stop anyone in Wolka's path. She is a genius swordsman that can copy techniques just by observing but this causes her brothers to shun her due to jealously. After seeing Wolka's technique, she became Wolka's apprentice. She is depressed about Wolka's injuries as she wants his technique to be known to the world. She's the one that accidently activate the trap to call the Reaper. she's originality the most innocent in the group but is now willing to kill for Wolka. She's the one that thinks Wolka has a dark backstory but Wolka doesnt care.
Atri is from a warrior tribe and as a warrior, she suppose to be in the front line. Her panicking from the reaper hurts her pride and injured Wolka. She takes her warrior pride way too literality. She now sees Wolka sees as her mate. She once gets on top of him and Wolka avoids it.
Wolka also has two powerful friends from the church, Wolka doesnt know their rank because they are in disguise. They are a saint and a divine knight. They are pissed and willing curse the gods because of Wolka's injuries. They even believe the reaper incident was set up from someone within the church as they are the final inspections of the dungeons.
So yea its understandable why they are attached but they do get insanely worried for Wolka though. For example when Wolka gets a cut on his hand. The girls panicked and screamed "Don't die!"
if that's the comedy, maybe this will be a funny readWolka: coughs
