Had a lot of interesting components but never fulfilled the potential it had at the start. The throughline of the story was fine, with a repudiation of desire in both excess and deficit and an embracement of human desire and connection. Took a bit too long to get there and Nomen wasn't the most compelling villain for the climax. The main problem lay in the lack of focus and inconsistent quality of the arcs. Belle only seemed to appear when needed to motivate Jagasaki, and both Yuma and Moroha disappeared entirely. The story with the bullied school friends was trite. I did like Mikazuchi's story. Really, this seems like a by the books shounen in a lot of ways once the lurid and licentious veneer is stripped away. Certainly there was more psychological and philosophical depth, but not to a dramatic degree. Still, it was entertaining and a fluid read.

When stories devolve into being about ideological warfare, you know they're gonna finish badly lmao. Not interesting. Why are Japanese authors so obsessed with these stories?

some publishers probably saw a few deep stories do well and force their writers to cram that shit in when it doesn't work and the author doesn't know how to write that
