Don't agree that he's "human garbage". Not if he wasn't aware of her liking him. Especially sure as hell can't feel too sorry for the girl when she seems like a straight-up physically abusive "friend" in the previous chapters.
Though, is he a desperate idiot trying to do damage control by any means? Absolutely.
