It seems like this 'Heavenly Network' is severely incompetent. Qu Chen warned them months before of what was brewing. Di Wen didn't take him seriously at all. It is easy to tell because, by watching Kunlun's disciples (in)actions, we can deduce that the orders they were given are severely outdated considering the situation. 'Do not do anything, unless an immortal directly attacks a mortal', 'do not confront any immortal whose belonging to Proxy of Heaven has not been certified, even when they act suspicious', 'stand guard, but do not investigate the dealings of mortals since these are the dealings of mortals in the first place, just watch'. Again, Qu Chen had warned months prior that Proxy of Heaven was likely not acting themselves, but instigating in the shadows. In these conditions, the disciples' deployment was always going to be useless.
Hence, i suspect that this is only the beginning of the catastrophic failures of Di Wen and the Network. My theories: his wife will be taken and his daughter will pay a hefty price and maybe even die, A-Ting's grandma will be killed, the general and his girl will die too, Chen will end up torn by a civil war for the throne at the worst moment, then more wars will happen without anyone doing anything by watching, and only AFTER it is too late will the orders given to the disciples finally become more adapted to the situation.
And one last theory of mine... the reason for these failures may turn out to be that A-Ting or someone else will engineer a reboot of things... Either a mass resurrection, a return in time, or something... Once A-Ting will have finally decided firmly what her path should be.
Because A-Ting has been prevaricating for some time now. Her path was clear when she slaughtered the Di, thanks to her grandpa. Protecting Chen, 'killing the wicked men', being a 'hero' for the people and figthing for Justice... But then, after she was taken to Kunlun, everyone telling her this was bad has dampened her resolve, and she now prioritises the whole 'mortals are mortals, you are not a mortal, so let things happen' that has been enforced on her for years, even by Qu Chen himself (here, what Cang Wuzi said when he took him starts to reveal its meaning: 'a pure child completely free of the mortal world's dirt, with no attachment there'. Indeed, Qu Chen knows no one in the mortal world and as a result, doesn't really care what happens to them. He only opposes Proxy of Heaven through philosophical and ethical principles. But A-Ting is fundamentally different, she has massive stakes in the mortal world, unlike pretty much any other cultivator, and i believe that when she realises this, it will be too late, again).
Indeed, A-Ting changing wouldn't be so bad in and by itself. But by killing the Emperor, i believe the author is starting a trend rooted in chaos. And considering everything i can guess is coming, the story is likely going to punish A-Ting for waiting on the sides. Once Chen has disappeared from the maps, it will be too late for A-Ting. But to other immortals, it will merely be a modifications of their maps. The consequences of this realisation may actually break A-Ting...
