Well I'm going off the assumption that since Avril has been in the office taking care of paperwork more often their father has been, so she must've came across the hidden safe; whether noticing the book activating the hidden shelf is off by sheer memory or when organizing the office, was dusting, and etc. She may have had plenty of time to figure out how to crack open the safe in the meantime.
