Sugar maple is an amazing wood. It's hard (i.e. damage-resistant), relatively easy to work with sharp tools, is one of the lightest colored common woods so it contrasts well with darker woods, stains and dyes well, and has multiple different attractive grain patterns depending on how it grows and how it's sawn. Canadians use the maple leaf as their symbol for a reason - they know how great a tree it is.
