This is actually quite common based on pictoral evidence. The visor does add protection, but it constricts your vision and breathing a decent bit. As such, it was seemingly quite common to have the visor only down when you're taking arrowfire, but lift it back up when you get into close combat so you can act unimpeded. You can generally avoid taking blows to the face well enough if you can see that it is a very worthwhile tradeoff.The knight lady spending the entire battle not pulling down the thingy meant to protect her face triggered me so bad.
