I don't really understand the point of that long ass flashback, that could have easily been one chapter of character development.

No, I also liked it. Or rather, appreciated it. Gave insight into the character. Even if readers don't like him, he's obviously going to be relevant to the story, and so they should also appreciate the opportunity to understand him more. It also gives more complexity to his connection with Kaia. If she hadn't delayed in giving support to the commander at that one battle, his siblings would all still be alive.
