technically what they made IS a trebuchet. A trebuchet uses leverage like a weird seesaw while a catapult (The Romans called them onagers) uses tension/torsion like a mouse trap with a spoon attached to the metal bar that hits the mouse.

The mountain elves will come up with more random stuff. Very mundane stuff too that will freak out lots of people in the future.

Like a combining (from carriages) mecha for a parade or size changing plate armor with retractable weapons in the gauntlets for Hakuren. And most recently automatic glass doors and escalators

Correct up to here. A trebuchet is a specific version of the catapult, nothing more, nothing less. Onagers and mangonels are also types of catapult, with mangonels also being referred to as "traction trebuchets", as manpower was used to pull the arm to position and give it power versus the counterweight-power of other designs. "Catapult" is a generic class, not a specific type of siege engine. What differentiates a trebuchet from any other type of catapult is that the arm rotates with a sling attached to throw the payload.
