I'm trying to put this discomfort I'm feeling with the story into words. Idk if it's the way the MC got roped into the Capital and then the frontier, or how the characters who know his strength seem to expect so much of him when it seems to me he hasn't fully committed yet.

Yes, he's strong and yes the heroes/heroes' bloodline traditionally put their lives on the line for their duty, but he's not cut from the same cloth yet it feels like he's suddenly expected to have the same level of devotion as a protector.

He's doing this for Medis but it doesn't give me the vibe that he's willing to do anything for her or the country.

I had the same sentiments, still have, as you. The way he was forced to become the princess's summoner totally rubbed me the wrong way, since before this he was okay with living a simple life. However, throughout his time spent in the capital he has seen the injustice of how commoners, especially commoner summoners are treated. He also saw how the princess was fighting this injustice, giving the commoner summoners a chance with better support and education. Lastly, how the commoners fought tooth and nail to justify their existence during the duel, he saw that he needed to use his powers, even if he still questions the motives of the royal family with him. At least he is helping the commoners.

Yes it seems everyone who mentioned in the comments he can cure everyone with his elixier forgot that the scroll burned at the end of chapter 24 when he try to draw an elixier after regaining his powers.
