If Layer 7 is going to be exponential, then you're probably looking at centuries between the time they entered and the current moment.

That said, I'm not sure if they can return unless some Deus ex machina makes them immune to the curse. It's been established repeatedly that they're so deep that returning is lethal, except for Reg, who is likely an artifact himself.
someone else pointed out that logic works really well if you just keep doubling it

Layer 1: 1 to 1
Layer 2: 2 to 1
Layer 3: 4 to 1
Layer 4: 8 to 1
Layer 5: 16 to 1
Layer 6: 32 to 1

So layer 7 would be 64 to 1 and layer 8 would be 128 to 1

That could still easily add up to years or decades. (Twins said they had a month left to live and if we see the rest of their lives, that's 28 * 64 =1,792 days on the surface, or about 5 years.

That said, I do agree about going back up. I'm not sure if that'd be possible without basically breaking the curse/abyss completely. But I am wondering if we could see different characters from throughout the series become white whistles and meet up with riko and the gang at the bottom. Despite them all leaving years apart, the time dilation would ensure they all reached the bottom at about the same time

So my personal theory about how they could possibly return to the surface after reaching the bottom is more of a headcanon. We know that the force field reacts to the incinerator retracting away when reg is charging it and can, somehow, exclude people from its effect when used in a field form as what happened during regs fight with bonedrewd. so theoretically speaking assuming unlimited charges/power source there is a chance that they could create a portable energy field using the "light of the core" to allow them to ascend even in the lower levels. basically like the cartridges but significantly less horrifying and possibly requiring less orphans to use.

Now it is extremely unlikely for anything like that to happen and would only apply to those who are effected by the curse like riko and nanachi. Riko went on this trip never expecting to return to the surface and none of her companions have any desire to ascend again. Depending on what they find in the lower levels and how long its been on the surface i do expect at least one of rikos friends to be hot on their trail depending on how long its been on the surface.

why does the author need to include pedo bulges and pedo nudity? he could just write a fantasy manga. he'd only need to tone it down just a little to make a manga that people could recommend without feeling like they're going to be judged.
well aren't you just actively looking for them. haven't you ever heard of something called tasteful nudity, especially regarding artwork? never can i recall has anything in this series blatantly forced such "fanservice" unless it was in-character or served some exposition: be it regarding story or character. i think you need to hunker down and consider what things you're consuming before yapping about shit

Uh huh. Then show page 19 of the volume 13 volume extras chapter 69.5 to your family members and ask them what they think. Tell them you really like this comic series.

I'm curious about how the curse will impact them on the 7th and 8th layer. the 6th layer either killed them or turned them into furrys but we've got no info on what it does past that. Clearly the gang here is still avoiding it so its gotta be bad

but i like the idea of Reg incinerating the curse in a small area to let the team move up when needed.

i actually had a theory ages ago that reg is in a time loop of sorts with reality resetting every 2000 years and him constantly finding the new riko to begin the story anew

If you're uncomfortable recommending a well-written work of fiction to people because of the content, that isn't a problem with the fiction. That's a problem with you.

If you judge art by whether or not publicly enjoying that art raises your social status, then you don't care about art and never did. Enjoying a work of fiction in solitude doesn't diminish the quality of the fiction. Some things in life are beautiful, but aren't meant to be shared with others.

I do love it how its usually manga like this that sparks this sort of discussion xd

You can love the series while also criticising the ways it handles it's underage characters, and it doesn't make you anti-art or anti-expression for wishing we didn't have to see or know some of the things Akihito included in the manga or it's extras. Riko being poisoned is a perfect example of how treating the characters in a more mature way makes for a perfect scene - but at other times Akihito's treatment of them is unnecessary or disturbing in a way that does not add anything and could've easily been left out.

I don't think it's a "me problem" or makes me a 'tourist'/'prude' for not wanting to know that Sherumi and Menae share underwear and excrete fluid from their navels, or that underage characters are tied up naked as punishment.

Wow Nanachi is not dead lets go !! But how do the past Reg become white though? There's no whistle...
He and the Girl-type are definitely related and immovable and the Dawn sovereign both recognized him as a Relic of the abyss.

So I’m guessing He was in Lyza’s group with the girl-type along with Ozen in their trip and was entrusted to escort Riko when she grows up back to the Abyss which is why he was chilling in the first Layer until he lost his memories.

Maybe the girl-type didn’t want him to leave the 7th layer which why they fought and left the whole holes in the last chapters?

This manga pacing is pretty dope. And teases my brain quite a bit. Its fun

We're 70 chapters into this manga. Whining about the same thing people have whined about since it got popular is just pointless and tiring. Yeah, it's there. No, he will keep drawing that shit. It just comes of as virtue signaling if you feel the need to point it out in every single discussion related to Made in Abyss for the past like decade. Don't worry bud, you're not a pedo for reading Made in Abyss, you don't need to point out every time that you don't like the nudity. This isn't reddit.

maybe he specifically doesn't want his work to have mainstream appeal and doesn't want 'fans' reducing it to a trendy aesthetic. as a result you know anyone who is openly a fan of MiA seriously appreciates the work enough to vouch for it in spite of its family-unfriendly elements. it encourages you to look past the surface and deeper into the abyss.

or maybe it's just the author's barely disguised fetish, which is and has always been extremely common in art and literature and you just have to learn to put up with it.
