Yeah if I remember correctly, I think the novel version seems to imply even more Yami initiated it

Assuming he's genuine about still being in love with her I'm currently leaning towards either

1. His feelings for Hikari never went away at all

2. His feelings for her resurfaced after the time he was in a relationship with Yami

And then whatever happened between him and Yami just now is what finally drove him to confess
