Yeah, you are right. And also we see a monk with a gun a couple of years before "Gensōmaden Saiyūki", which was popular also in the west thanks to the anime. I don't think Kei Kusunoki's character was the first monk to use a gun to eliminate demons, oni, spirits and other supernatural creatures, but this certainly predates other authors.
