As much as it's a tired trope, it does still happen from time to time. Schools, especially public schools, are beholden to public perception. So if the school's image is being threatened they'll act rash to save itself, even if the innocent party is the one punished.

Anyways, I'm surprised that this kind of development is happening. It seems like the author is seeing that almost all the conflict of the MC has been resolved or is being resolved, so he needed to introduce something new.
