The context is in flashbacks. Earlier she was yelling and mocking him for not being able to have his own children. That was when she was stressing over her current pregnancy.

So her announcing that she's pregnant comes off as a slap in the face to him. The stepdaughter and her mother's comments were to turn that slap into a knife, twisting his heart.

This is to cut him off and isolate him from his family, so that he is going to rely and depend on his stepdaughter and wife more. It's a tactic used by cults.

Edit: His sister thinks she's being able to rely on her onii-chan with the announcement, he thinks she's severing their relationship.

I suppose it depends, esp if the 'mother in law' is good at guilt tripping or somehow is roped into 'helping' raise more often than the occasional 'grandma duty' or so but other than high fees i'm surprised he wouldn't have noticed before , assuming she has to take like...pre-natal vitamins or whatever versus just eating 'healthy' while in her second pregnancy or so but yeah i can imagine it blowing up, esp if she loses her job too b/c it'd be bad for the manager to still work together for her (i assume she deleted the contact too rather than just the message even tho i imagine ppl would prolly keep it for ppl getting texted to get into work)

Saying that def seemed cruel even if she wasn't pregnant again but i wonder if he picks up on like "She said all that, does that mean that she doesn't want her current pregnancy" and figures out that it was an 'accident' even tho he might not know about it being an affair unless the wife and Touko 'loudly' whispering just enough for him to 'overhear' /find out that it was because of an affair
