I find it strange there would be some inherent value in taking selfies like that. Even before digital consumer cameras, let alone smartphones, were thing, film cameras already had timer functions. Smartphones naturally have it as well. So, you can place your smartphone in a good position when you are in a controlled environment and then have it take a photo with the delay, allowing you to position yourself decently. It will be using the better main camera, plus you aren't in an unnatural pose holding the smartphone as far from you as your arm allows, yet it's actually still not far enough.
