The pull of the Monk's water that ties you to the land / its body isn't powerful enough to break the claim the Moon Presence has on the Aunt. Probably why the water tasted bad to her - something is "wrong" with her.

IRL, we get crap relations at the everyday level and crap politics from the faiure to express oneself in a clear and timely manner, and to attend to what others are trying to express.

Huh. Reminds me visually of a fungal network.... stuff can grow in a well sometimes. Though in this case it seems a lil more. supernatural.

yeah this is just solidly unsettling.

when I saw the last panel all I could think of was chewing gum on the pavement. the feeling of a slimy wooden bench, of your finger passing through cobwebs, having an insect crawl across your skin ... I feel like its that kind of everyday visceralness that goes the last mile in cosmic horror yknow

this is funny to me for some reason. like, the idea that the only way of avoiding being devoured in this setting is by something else already having dibs on you.

I don't think this is the first time we've seen this happen, either right? you don't negotiate with the gods directly, they negotiate over you.

Your comment reminds me of Elder Scrolls. In Skyrim, for example, your soul can be claimed by Hermaeus Mora, Sithis, Nocturnal, and Sovngarde all all at the same time. In Morrowind, you are claimed by Azura, Hircine, and more depending on which guild you join. Oblivion has you claimed by the Nine Divines while simultaneously becoming Sheogorath.

But yeah, the Great Ones in this setting can lay claim to land and the souls within, like Gerai and the priestess, the Window Observer and the paranoid guy, the Moon Presence and Asama's family land, and they generally don't play nice with each other, hence why you need 'separation'-based rituals like soul splitting or land descent to separate a Great One from their prey. And it doesn't always work.
