Without spoiling what will happen, it technically doesn't matter if Doben or Waffles is the Hero. Ed just has to join their party and be exiled from it to complete his mission. But if Doben isn't blackmailed, won't Waffle lose?
Then how will he become hero?
That's part of why they're helping Waffles to become stronger. They want him to be able to win legitimately. But if Doben isn't blackmailed, won't Waffle lose?

Doben is great Wolf, but we know that there are specific reasons why he lost tournament later on
he doesn't need to be in fact good odds if doben becomes the hero waffles tags along or at least becomes a friendly rival traveling along but seperate. But if Doben isn't blackmailed, won't Waffle lose?
Then how will he become hero?

Well, if Doben wins the tournament because Ed rescued Doben's kidnapped sister before Doben could be blackmailed into throwing the fight, that should count a lot toward improving Doben's opinion of Ed. Now granted it will be a whole hell of a lot harder if Waffles loses since Ed has no rapport with Doben, but Ed's decided to go for the best endings so he'll just have to figure that out if it happens.
