The author gave Hanako some attention in the last two chapters in the main series. With that said, Author just wanted to focus on the rest of the cast members which caused Hanako to take a backseat.

My head canon is that Itachi's willingness to fight dirty (or at least underhandedly in a friendly match) would be the equalizer vs. Kuzuhana's greater size and skill.
