I have him as 3rd year HS with an age of 17. He has to be at least 2nd year because the girls in his class were talking about what the "legendary moment in our first year". For some reason I'm certain it's 3rd year but I don't have why in my notes.

It's hard to figure this out as it hasn't been directly stated what grade he's in. We know that he is 17 and we know that he had the "legendary moment" in the 1st-year school festival. 2nd years will be in the 16-17 age range so all of that fits. (I admit that my notes saying he's 3rd year must be incorrect and I will fix that.) The "2 years" left statement probably includes the current year as this would be summer leaving about 2/3 of the year to go. I believe that the translation is in error. The Latin American Spanish translation makes more sense when ran through Google Translate:

Puede ser... Pero no es para tanto, aun estamos en segundo de prepa.

Maybe... But it's not that bad, we're still in second year of high school.
