Testudo formation with iron shield + plate armor + crossbow combo ? I am not sure how it would work
iron shield and plate armor are too heavy to use effectively with Testudo formation
the gap between shield is too narrow and would limit both the crossbow angle and rate of fire
oh well it's fantasy and it's cool

Was just about to point this out. But creators love having testudos everywhere without thinking about the weaknesses of the formation.

I don't know if this would actually work, but what about taking chunks out of the ground and/or putting obstacles in the way? Anything that would force the uniformity to break.

Hell yeah, time for Aegir to lock in. Bulky offense does the advantage against hyper offense.

Right on the shield part (Roman scutum was made of planks covered with leather) but plate armor would have weighted less than modern infantry combat gear (40-50lbs vs 60-100lbs). There were heavier plate armor (1700-) but that was mostly only for jousting or purely ceremonial.

A few cannons would do a pretty fine work here...

As if the earlier battles weren't as ridiculous as this one. The author simply reads about historic battles and incorporates them into the story without any context about why the tactics work. And the fact that they communicate instructions instantly during battle is getting tiring... I mean, disengaging wasn't easy, direct charges weren't easy, casualties were mostly during retreats or when the army broke. I know there's magic in this world, but at least don't try to portray the protagonists as tactical geniuses.
