It was no coincidence, that the 1st Empress asked the MC about his mother. She was curious about the relationship (besides they bloodline) between the MC and his mother, because there is (most probably) also a conflict between the mothers of the princes.

The MC's answer meant for she, that the MC and his mother ain't allies, thus the MC is not an enemy of her, the 1st Empress.

That's only part of it, the situation is a bit more complex. She is (at least) also relieved:

1. At first the MC states that:
   

   I WISHED TO LIVE OUT MY LIFE QUIETLY, FAR REMOVED FROM THE BURDEN OF THE THRONE.

   That, with the 2 pages later revealed 3rd wish of the MC means:​
   I want to ally myself with the 1st prince while I don't wish to inherit the throne.​
   That's very important!​
2. Then the 1st Empress asks about his mother, while seemingly embarrassed.

She is the mother of the 1st and 3rd princes. This whole event will most probably solidify his eldest son's claim to the throne. This also means, that she don't have to hold back while disciplining the 3rd prince.

The fact that she is sad for the MC is also of great importance: It indicates, that she stops looking down on him.
