Either this is a very young author, or a person with inferity complex about being in their 30's-40's. Seriously that's not old, and everyone calling him that to his face seems like huge disrespect towards any stranger.
Even if the original japanese word is "Ojii-san", doesn't suit at all. Especially japanese people, at least on average look very good for their age and they age slowly, at least by their appearance.

The real answer is "cuz beard" like most of those Ojii-san chara are like really old with wrinkles or a bearded person (heavy or light doesn't matter).
Just look at any "old man" character being just a "dad age" and doesn't really get to the point of the old "grandpa age".
Maybe cuz there is no word to describe a person in that group of age, maybe adult but it just felt weird, not entirely correct and not widely used

To everyone complaining that he let the rapists go without killing them, would you have the mental fortitude to kill three people like that when you've never harmed another human being in your life up until then? I'd be seriously concerned if you could, honestly. I know I wouldn't be able to pull the proverbial trigger like that. It's so easy to sit back in your chair and scoff while saying you would have simply just killed the person, but there's really no such thing as "simply killing" someone. Not unless you're so completely devoid of all morals, ethics, empathy, and everything else that makes you human that you can kill someone without a second thought.

This is a world where modern governments and laws are still intact. This middle-aged former businessman isn't suddenly going to become the judge, jury, and executioner out of nowhere and start killing everyone he doesn't like.
