I feel bad for Mari. She clearly knows the situation and wanted to at least glow in a bit of attention. She's not bad-looking or anything either, she could be a friend to MC in another series. I'm glad she won't be adding any drama, although Sedin is making up for it...

I'm sorry, Sedin, but you are being an absolute jerk-ass right now. You bring a girl to the ball, you pay attention to her. Period.
Actually. Why!? He's been forced to go there. If he pays attention to her, she might get her hopes up. It's better she try to have fun at the ball regardless.

The only valid argument here is that he should have stayed away, since it's all just pain.
And there's no noblesse oblige, either. He's stated that he's a commoner.

I don't like either of them, and I especially hate the system that's forced her into this situation.
Yep. I think Renée should just tell the system that if it doesn't stop maltreating her, she will either level the whole country, or maybe just her "father" the duke, plus the royal family. And if the system then were to mess with her, she could continue destroying the story. Sure, some "viewers" would enjoy that, but those behind the system would probably be taking some sort of loss.
Consider that she was promised to get to go home after suffering through hundreds of years in a tower story. Then she most probably was so popular among "viewers" that those behind the system decided to keep her on. If she shows that she won't take it, and tells them she's willing to discuss terms and conditions, things might change.
But she doesn't have that sort of insight into what sort of system she's living inside, unfortunately.

Aw man poor primogem girl.
At this rate I wonder how this story going wrap up with both male leads are being real toxic like this
How is Sedin toxic? He's in love. And hurting. He hasn't acted badly at all. He's there, with the girl stipulated by the bastard prince, but he hasn't promised anybody that he would "show her a good time", or anything. So that's not toxic.
The crown prince, on the other hand, is a really horrible person.

Yeah...no matter how hard I want to root for him, this is just a very unhealthy obsession from Sedin
Nah. You would probably accept the over-the-top bad guys as acting correctly in this story? Say the emperor, the crown prince, crown princess, the duke?
Well then, check out some medieval chanson de geste, or more modern romance stuff, preferably with knights, dragons, and maybe you begin to get an inkling of what we are looking at here?
Sedin is a knight, and she is his love, and he is facing adversity. It ALL fits in with his behavior. The writer is doing his/her job (even though my heart is bleeding for the poor schmuck).

So I will repeat myself: ALL of you who are whingeing about Sedin doing wrong: you ALL are wrong. From a meta perspective, he is the knight, who is supposed to idolise his love, and who is supposed to be faced with adversity.
He is NOT supposed to be beholden to some modern (well, actually, sort of antiquated) either Asian concept of duty, or American Christian version of the same). I guess you all heaping opprobrium on him can be seen as you holding him to a higher standard than the obvious cad prince.
But the thing is, the author/writer is doing it correctly here. It's fully correct for the knight role to be this extremely romantic.
You all should read Johann Wolfgang Goethe's The Sorrows of Young Werther (1774). That will give you a bit of perspective. I mean when that one was in full sway, people (readers/fans/idiots) actually killed themselves - and dressed like the love-struck schmuck of the story (and I can tell you his clothing sense was not up to par ...).

That's like, Dating 101, though? I'm not holding him to a standard as a nobleman. I'm holding him to a standard as a human being.
