That denial shouldn't be a big deal for Akira, seeing how just days ago he didn't even know these folks exist. So, even if he was told they are his relatives, he doesn't know them at all, forget about feeling kinship with them. So, basically, it would have all been up to them to make him feel welcome. If they had, perhaps over time he would have started to have positive feelings about them. The geezer pretty much destroyed that possibility, so they will remain as strangers. The geezer will reap what he sowed.

But then again, this series is what it is and Akira is a blistering idiot. It wouldn't surprise me if he dropped onto his knees to beg for the geezer to forgive Carl and accept Akira as his grandson.

Especially in a setting like this where the character is meeting dignitaries, nobles, etc. When meeting somebody for the first time in a formal/semi-formal setting, don't fuss with your hair! Why don't you kick off your shoes and trim your toenails while you're at it!

In a setting between commoners or with someone of the same rank, Akira could bluntly brush it off with a harsh reply like "Fine by me... I came here for business, not to play house". Thing is, this is an official meeting between a local ruler and royals. Akira, as Medis vassal, is not in a position where he can act as he pleases. And the princess needs to address why she wanted to see the Marquis. The best option would probably be tó look at Ludmir and reply something cold ("I see...") or sarcastic ("Neither do I...") and then leave him be. Alternatively act dumbfounded, look at Medis and ask "Am I supposed to feel upset now?"

But Akira wouldn't be able to pull that off, seeing how he acted so far.

Yeah but Princess Calliope is acting super casual (as she usually does) and Esmeralda says in that exact panel to treat this place like it's your home so it makes sense he'd let the formalities down a little bit before Gramps makes his presence known.

Gramps's disposition isn't entirely unjustified either. He's probably just an asshole, sure, but from an outside perspective it certainly LOOKS like Akira could be wowing these naive young princesses with the Rainford name and maybe just a bit of above-average skill (especially that Stromheim girl, they're all muscle-brained idiots who probably couldn't tell REAL magical skill from parlor tricks!) and is now trying to schmooze his way back into the main family's good graces for money or further influence. After all, this "special operations summoner" stuff all sounds like nonsense.
