Motoyuki was trapped in his own childhood trauma/cycle of violence stuff he hadn't worked through. I think the manga is making the case that he was destined to fall into that cycle, with whoever he was with. The intent w/ Kuroko had been to break it, which is why he had told her he didn't want to be like his father.
